Septic installers and haulers in Ohio, from the state's own bond lists
Ohio has no statewide list of registered septic contractors. Installers, service providers and septage haulers register with each local board of health they work under, and every registration ends on 31 December. What the Ohio Department of Health does publish statewide is its bond lists: the contractors who have filed the statewide surety bond the rules require before any district may register them.

What each bond allows
| Bond | What it covers |

| Installer | Installs or alters a sewage treatment system (Ohio Adm. Code 3701-29-01(FFF)). Repairs that change a system are alterations. |
| Septage hauler | Collects, transports and disposes of septage, and may report on the condition of a tank being pumped (3701-29-01(JJJJ)). |
| Service provider | Services, monitors, evaluates or samples a system, but does not install or alter one (3701-29-01(OOOO)). |

How a septic permit works in Ohio
The local board of health reviews the site and issues the installation or alteration permit; the state does not. A permit is valid for one year from the date it is issued, and the board may extend it by six months.
